Easy Baking Substitutions

Easy Baking Substitutions – today’s post is all about my favorite baking substitutions, specifically for cakes!

Easy Baking Substitutions

I think this post is long-overdue, but one that couldn’t be more timely! With everyone stocking up on emergency preparedness items, some of our favorite baking ingredients are hard to find on store shelves right now. It’s ok, though! We’re going to do our best to keep baking and work with substitutions, if we have to.

I say, if we have to, because, of course, it’s always best to use the exact ingredients a recipe calls for. However, desperate times, call for desperate measures. If you’re in a pinch, I’d rather you use sub than not bake at all!

I’m a self-taught baker, obsessed with cake.

I long ago ditched box mixes in pursuit of melt-in-your-mouth, to-die-for flavor combinations, fillings and textures. I believe cake must be decadent, life-changing and worthy of celebration! And I believe anyone should be able to bake that kind of cake – and I’m here to teach you just that!

  1. Thank you for this timely substitution list! I was going to make my own birthday cake (using one of your recipes), but because of COVID-19, I couldn’t get my hands on buttermilk or heavy cream! Well, my birthday has come and gone, but yesterday, I was able to find those ingredients. Yay! So, yesterday I heard David Butler mention the idea of making a cake for general conference- to celebrate the birthday of the First Vision. So, cake making is back on! We will make one of your cakes and celebrate on Sunday the 200th anniversary of the First Vision. Thanks for all you do to brighten our world. 🙂

  2. Hey Courtney!
For the heavy cream, buttermilk, and sour cream, would almond milk/yogurt or another non-dairy substitute always work like you have in your non-dairy recipies? Thank you!

  3. Hey, many of the recipes call for with egg yolks or egg whites and I was wondering whether there were any substitutes for this please?
I have tried apple sauce, mashed bananas, flax seed etc but have not been able to find a good enough alternative? I was wondering if you could help? Thank you

  4. Hey, thank you for this. I was wondering what the replacement for egg yolks would be? And what the replacement would be for egg whites? Many of your lovely recipes involve these ingredients and it would be great if there were substitutes for these as well as the egg substitute you have mentioned? Thank you

  5. Do you ever used carton egg whites? I feel guilty just dumping the yolk of eggs when it calls for large amounts of egg whites. Suggestions?
