Sometimes we don’t realize how much an oven temperature, mixing time, or measurements for ingredients can affect a cake. While I have tips for all of these obstacles, I’m going to focus on measuring ingredients just right in this post. It can be tricky at first, but once you learn these 5 tips on how to measure wet and dry ingredients for cake, you’ll be breezing through your cake baking process!

5 Tips on How to Measure Wet and Dry Ingredients for Cake
Cake Ingredient Measuring Tip #1: Spoon your dry ingredients into the measuring cup rather than scooping it out.
Do you usually scoop out your flour with your measuring cup rather than spoon it into the cup? Doing it this way will cause you to get too much flour into that cup and make your cake too dense.
Instead, take a spoon and carefully add it to your measuring cup. When the measuring cup is full, use a butter knife to gently push off the excess flour. Measuring it out this way will make your flour light and airy, and it will help carry that texture all the way into your finished cake!
Cake Ingredient Measuring Tip #2: Fluff up your dry ingredients before adding them to your measuring cup.
Another step I like to add when I’m spooning my flour into my measuring cup is to fluff it up a bit before adding it in. This can be done by giving it a few stirs with your spoon to create some air in between the flour. After it’s all nice and fluffy, go ahead and add it to your measuring cup using the process explained in tip #1.
Cake Ingredient Measuring Tip #3: Have all of your wet ingredients at room temperature before incorporating them into your cake batter.
Having your wet ingredients at room temperature (butter, eggs, buttermilk, etc) is key to getting a good bake for your cake. I recommend taking out your wet ingredients from your fridge at least a couple of hours before you plan on using them for your recipe.
If the ingredients are still too cold you risk having lumps and clumped-up ingredients in your batter. Having your wet ingredients at room temperature will help your dry ingredients get absorbed into your cake batter more easily too. And it will create a smooth and silky texture that you’re wanting for your cake batter!
Cake Ingredient Measuring Tip #4: Don’t rush through the measuring process.

Taking your time when measuring your ingredients will always pay off. Especially when you are measuring your liquid ingredients! Make sure to have your measuring cup on a flat surface when filling it to get the exact amount the recipe calls for. If it’s for a smaller amount in a measuring spoon hold it at eye level to ensure it’s the right amount.
You probably already have heard these tips for measuring your liquid ingredients, or may already do them, but this is your friendly reminder to not rush through it! Taking time to make sure all your measurements are precise will help guarantee a good bake for your cake every single time!
Cake Ingredient Measuring Tip #5: Use a scale to measure your ingredients. (Or quality measuring cups and spoons you can rely on.)
Using a scale to measure your ingredients is always the easiest way to get the correct amounts every time. But if you love using measuring cups like me, that is totally OK too. But if you’re wanting to stick with a scale, this is my favorite one. No matter what method you prefer, both will get you quality bakes!
